Every woman owns a bra and there is a bra for every woman. The bra is one item that you cannot not have as a woman. If you have breasts, irrespective of cup size, then you need a bra. Bra is short for brassiere and it is made for supporting and covering the breasts. The word brassiere was entered into the Oxford English Dictionary by 1911. The bra is said to be one of the most complicated piece of clothing to make. There are up to 48 parts in a typical design, which includes the straps, lining, cups, hooks etc. Every bra has a chest band, two cups and a pair of shoulder straps and made with a variety of materials including lace, spandex, foam, mesh etc.

How a bra is designed is dependent on the style and the intent for it. It may be designed to create cleavage or enhance the size, or create the illusion of perkiness, or to ease breastfeeding or to help during sporting activities. The chest band and cups are designed to support the breast’s weight. This is because the larger the breasts the more pressure it exerts on your shoulders and back. The bra does a good job helping with all that lifting, reducing pain and bettering your posture. An ill fitting bra too might also be the cause of back pain which is why it is pertinent to buy the right size for your breasts.

Bras come in a band and cup size where the number is the band size and the letter is the cup size (as in 36A). The band size is the measurement directly underneath the breasts and the cup size is the volume of the breasts. To accurately measure your band size, use a seamstress’s tape. Round up the result to the nearest whole number. If the result is an odd number, add five, if result is an even number, add four. So if your measurement rounded up to 28, then your band size is 28 + 4= 32, since 28 is an even number.

To calculate your cup size, take the measuring tape and measure round the fullest part of your breast (this is usually the nipple area), round up the result to a whole number. Now subtract it from your band size measurement. So for example, if your full area measurement is 37 and your band size as earlier calculated is 32, 37 minus 32 is 5. This means that your cup size will be DD.

By knowing your exact bra size, you not only wear bras healthy for your breasts, but you are also aware of your sister sizes. Sister sizes are bra sizes that are your current bra size breast volume equivalent with a slightly wider band size. This is important for situations where the cup size fits just right but the band is snuffing the life out of your beautiful body or it is too loose for comfort.

Finding your sister size is easy, simply go up a band size and go down a cup size or go down a band size and go up a cup size. If your bra size is 32DD, your sister up size will be 34D while your sister size down will be 30DDD. Below is the sister size up and down chart. If your bra is tight, switch to the sister size up, if it is loose, switch to the sister size down.
