LOUD WHISPERS: Prophecies And Common Sense

At the end of the year or the beginning of a new one, there is usually a torrent of prophecies around the world.  Humanity has always expressed a desire to know what the future holds, either out of curiosity or a desire to prepare for the unknown. Every civilization we know of has included those who specialize in foretelling events before they happen. No matter how sophisticated a society becomes and regardless of the advances in science and technology, there is still a vast market for the selling and buying of prophecies. I have always believed that prophets old and new simply derive their ‘prophecies’ from observing trends and using this as a basis for forecasting future events. This could be as basic as observing weather patterns or the migration of birds and animals to determine whether a particular society would face severe environmental challenges resulting in famine, drought, wars over scarce resources and so on. There are also sophisticated predictions based on demographic analysis or scientific enquiry so it becomes a question of when and not if. For example, recently, I was reading about the findings of  Cadell Last, an Evolutionary Anthropologist who claims that humankind is going through some kind of cultural evolution which will have implications for what human beings will look like in the year 2050. By then, according to Cadell, life expectancy in most of the advanced world will be approximately 120 due to advances in medicine and better understanding of the human body, human beings would have learned to compete with robots for jobs, the best languages to learn for global business would be Mandarin and Spanish and not only English, and more global transactions would be done out of India and China than in the usual commercial centers in the West.

There are many predictions like Cadell’s based on hard evidence and a diligent study of trends as they unfold. Savvy corporations, governments and civil society organisations now incorporate Scenario Planning into their strategic plans in order to stay abreast of how known and  yet unknown factors might affect the future. Some of the predictions of the science-based  Futurists are quite scary. I am however prepared to listen to them and learn more about a future (hopefully a positive one)  that we might not live in, but would be inherited by our descendants. Can you imagine how our ancestors must feel seeing us use mobile phones to communicate – very proud and wondrous. Well, minus what we share on Facebook and Instagram! What I am not interested in listening to are the opportunistic prophets of doom who take up so much time and space to regale us with the latest voices in their heads. Let us start with Ghana. For 2017, Prophet Owusu Bempah of Glorious World Ministry International has foreseen the following:

  • The death of a former President
  • The death of a former First Lady
  • The death of Nigeria’s President
  • The death of ‘several young men and women’
  • The death of a great King.

  1. I almost laughed at the sarcasm that eroded this article but then this is truly our reality. I must say that we Africans have resolved into prophesying rather than foreseen the future and making relevant preparations for it. This is not a recent trend of course but perhaps this is the time for change. Let’s forget about prophesies and work on making a better future for our descendants.

  2. It is always interesting to note that the most developed countries of the world are hardly religious while it is otherwise for the less developed and under developed countries. I believe if prayer or any of these prophesies is easy this country needs it has gotten enough of it by now and see where we still are. It is time to stop the prophesying and simply work towards a better future for us and our unborn children

  3. I can’t but just laugh at the sarcasm of this article. This is so appropriate to tackle the prohecies of doom we hear every single new year and i wonder if the God we serve is all about doom. Common sense is indeed not common. Happy new year peeps.

  4. Most of these prophesies are just environmental prophecy. The most concerned part of it is that people are been deceived with it.

  5. To me I strongly belived that God speaks and also there are word of prophecy. But the point is that every prophecy that comes out have to be decerned if it is by God. Even if it is by God you have to work towards it. You don’t just hear a word of prophecy and fold your arms or go back to bed expecting miracles. The bible even says work and pray. Let’s stop fooling ourselves.

  6. Really funny. must of this this are just words coming out of the mouth of people.in psychology we call it prediction. must people Fack around predictions and must happen to be facts. But in Nigeria and Africa in general we need more prayers.

  7. Prophecies upon prophecies, what have we enjoyed from them? Is it only negative prohecies we must always hear? It is well with our nation.

  8. May The Lord save us from false prophets. When the Lord reveals something about a nation or set of people to a man of God to say. He doesn’t have to go about saying it around – thereby proclaiming the “ministry of fear” IN the heart of men. If they could foresee these dreadful events – I guess there should be a way to avert them before they come to pass. The work of a Prophet is to pray regarding every bad future occurrence.

God bless you for these great article

  9. First of all, I’d like to commend your effort for this great article, Ma. May the Lord continually increase you IN knowledge and understanding.
Prophecies are events speculated to happen at a particular given time in the nearest or later future. Prophecies are not just predictions of Occurrencies coined out of happenings around – like most acclaimed men of God do. They have never foreseen something good about the nation.
They keep coining out “prophecies” from Occurrencies that my common sense can tell me the outcome.
We had a Prophet somewhere in Africa that prophesied whom the new USA presidential elect would be – IN which the outcome was the otherwise. May God help us, let’s just stop the trash.. God is not a man that He should lie.
There is no shadow of turning with Him. He is forever God.

It would have been a different case if those that claim to foresee bad events can as well foresee the way out…. No!!!!!!!!

    They never.

God bless Abovewhispers for always giving us great articles.
    God bless the writer.

  10. Hahahahahaha….. I can’t stop laughing…

God judge the tongue that lies. God bless Nigeria.

    God bless Abovewhispers…
