I should have known when I went into two wine shops, looking for a half bottle of champagne, with no success. I arrived San Francisco on November 7th, to attend a board meeting at the Global Fund for Women. When the dates were confirmed at our June meeting in New York, I was very pleased that the fall board meeting would coincide with US election day.  On Tuesday November 8th, election day, I was looking forward to staying glued to the election coverage on CNN in my hotel room. My plan was to arm myself with a half-bottle of champagne (It would not make sense to buy a full bottle I could not finish on my own) and plenty of Salt and Vinegar crisps, with room service when I needed it. I was going to spend the evening following the Electoral College count, and when the good news was confirmed, I would celebrate with my champagne and listen to the acceptance speech of the First Female President of the United States. Oh, in case you did not know, I am a certified election junkie!

On November 8th2008, I hosted an election vigil at my house in Accra, Ghana with some of my friends. From 9pm GMT till 6am, we ate chicken wings, gizzards, fruit, and drank champagne. When States such as Iowa, Ohio, Philadelphia, and North Carolina were called for Barrack Obama, we knew we truly had cause to celebrate, he had won. We however waited patiently for when the results from California and the rest of the West Coast came in. We screamed and yelled non-stop. On November 8th 2012, I was invited by the US Embassy in Nigeria, to be part of an election night vigil they organized in Lagos.  It was a long night of speeches (I was asked to give a speech about the role of women in politics and elections) and election monitoring, interspersed with entertainment.

For November 8th 2016, my plans were more solitary – TV, my laptop for back-up monitoring, half a bottle of champagne and Salt and Vinegar crisps. When I could not find the size of champagne I wanted, I settled for a bottle of chilled Chardonnay. The evening started well enough. I sent a text to my husband saying, ‘Florida is almost in the bag! Yippeee!’. Then it all went south. At some point, I started to shiver as if I was very cold. When I could not bear it anymore I switched off the TV and went to bed, but not to sleep. I switched the TV back on at 12 midnight. By then Hillary’s loss had been confirmed. All the regular CNN talking heads who were mostly pro-Hillary sounded shell-shocked, carefully picking their words, with the Pro-Trump guests in full gloating mode. It was hard to watch.

  1. Great thank you note. I love the part of the political junkie, unfortunately i ain’t one, and i am not obsessed with political elections. I just flow as it comes. Good write up and i sm sure Hilary Clinton has changed the mindset of millions of people in the world.

  2. Ultimately, I think elections should not be made about gender, man against woman. But about the things they both stand for and the general interest of the people. For the things she Hilary stood for, history will never forget

  3. I think the greatest danger feminism is facing is that not all women are feminist, actually most women are not. A lot of women will rather still have a man rule while they Enjoy the luxury of controlling the man the best way they can. Majority of American women didn’t want a female president, maybe someday soon they will. Hilary did her best but the best doesn’t always win

  4. She has really done her best. The step she took aspiring for that post was really a great one, and a major turn on and inspiration for all women, ladies and girls out there – with a dream, a vision…..

    God bless Hillary Clinton
    God bless America
    God bless Abovewhispers
    God bless Nigeria…..

  5. Sincerely, I think the Democracts we too relaxed, they didn’t put in hardwork and tussle like Trump did. Trump never allowed his name off people’s mouth.

He was just too conspicuous for everyone. It’s sad that the man who disregard women and say all sort of vulgar languages has won. It just shows that American isn’t as literate as the claim to be.

  6. Hmmmm
this happens everywhere. The empty vessel that makes the loudest noise is most times chosen by the ignorant populace who sometimes make the majority of a state.

This exact scenario with Trump and Hillary happened somewhere In Nigeria, In a south-western state. People sometimes need to see the otherside of the sea.

  7. I didn’t see his victory coming at all. But then, I hope that Hillary heals, I pray that her strenght be renewed and like she said, we shouldn’t stop fighting for what is Right.

    Ride on Hillary!

  8. Well, so sad that Hillary lost but you should have know that the archaic system that makes women nothing still reigns in America via the electorate.

Even though some people are against trump, you should have known that a man worth 7billion dollars isn’t stupid at all. He knows what he is doing and as a business man, there are lots of strategies.

Will Hillary have performed better than Trump? Politics isn’t about the face.,, its about the mind which people cannot see. I don’t think she needs power again… she’s been there for a while.

All the same, she tried her best and I think she got the best result. Let her rest off the white House. Biko.

  9. I hail Hillary’s courage and i will always remember her strength and her campaign, her words were with great understanding.

She is really a great public servant. Thanks Hillary

  10. @Nkem, that is the wrong mindset that most people have, what do you mean by let her rest off the white house. she is a passionate woman who isn’t power-hungry like Trump.

You need to understand that when you see a good stuff you approve of it and take off every unncessary sentiment. She really tried and i will tell you, She will perform tentimes better, because she understand public service.

Thanks for this great post and please women need to support themselves and not behave like those Annoying white women association. We should learn to support one another.

  11. Hmmmmmm, I never saw Trump winning. Even thou I wasn’t really interested about the whole election issues, I wanted a lady to win at least. I got updates about the presidential debates from friends and on the day of the election all i wanted to hear was that Hillary Clinton wins. But i was shocked and bit sad she lose the election.
Am stil so surprised Trump won, and this has changed people’s view and mindsets. I just pray that God takes control of the leadership of America.
Hillary Clinton is a strong woman and I know she will heal fast.

  12. In all these, lessons are learnt.
    God bless American
    God bless Nigeria
God bless d leadership of Donald Trump
God heal Hillary Clinton and make her stronger
God bless abovewhispers.com for daily post and updates
