Security personnel at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife have arrested some persons in connection with a fight which led to the death of one Olufemi Ayoola Omoboriowo.

The fight was said to have broken out at ‘New Bukataria’ area on the campus around 10pm on Thursday.

The Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, said in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Friday that the deceased was not a student of the institution.

The statement read, “The Quick Response Squad of the security unit of the university was immediately dispatched to the scene on a rescue mission, having shut all the exit roads that could be used as escape routes by the perpetrators. On arrival at the scene, the only victim, who sustained severe head injury was rushed to the University Medical and Health Centre, where he was pronounced dead.

“The security unit of the institution has made some arrests and handed over the suspects to the Moore Police Station. Although, the victim and those presently being interrogated are neither students nor workers of the university.”

He said the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, had reassured the general public, particularly OAU students, their parents/guardians and the entire university community of their safety.

He urged  students and members of the university community  to “disregard the rumours of cultists’ invasion and go about their studies and businesses without fear of molestation from any quarters.”

The vice-chancellor sympathised with the family of the victim and prayed to God to give them the fortitude to bear the loss.

However, efforts to confirm if the clash was related to cultism or not were unsuccessful as the Police Public Relations Officer in Osun State, Mrs. Folashade Odoro, did not answer repeated calls to her telephone and had yet to reply the text message sent to her.
