LOUD WHISPERS: Our Girls Now Wear Spanx To School

In honour of Michale Matthew

Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi

Our girls now wear Spanx to school

Not one, but two, even three pairs of Spanx

It is not that they are fat

Their tummies are still flat

Chinua Achebe told us that ever since men learnt to shoot without missing

Eneke the bird learnt how to fly without perching

Ever since the boys learnt how to use scissors to cut their skirts

And carry out a sickening annual ritual

Our girls have learnt how to wear Spanx to school

The boys strut about

Chests out and voices loud

Clapping, cheering, jeering

Rape is now a sport

Rape is now a joke

Something they look forward to

Something they plan

Something the girls expect

Something the girls have learnt to dread

So they wear Spanx to school

The boys stalk their prey mercilessly

And surprise, surprise, broad daylight is just fine!

The more the audience

The better the fun

The sharper the focus of the cameras clicking away

The boys have scissors

So the girls wear Spanx

It happened last year

It happened last week

It is happening today

Good girls and boys don’t carry scissors to school

They have no knives or sharp objects either

So all a girl can do to make it harder for the demon boys

Is wear Spanx to school

Usually one, but to be safe

Wear two pairs of Spanx to school

Maybe three

The mothers clap, at long last, the girls go to school

Moses, Matthew and Majomi

Martha, Maria and Mary

They all go to school side by side

Martha does not stay home to learn to make the perfect Eba

So that Mathew can go to school to be a Doctor

The fathers grin because now

they can boast that Mathew is a Doctor

Martha is a Lawyer, Moses is an Engineer and Majomi is a Writer

All were created equal

Alas, they are not all equal

Wonderful lines, embedded with thought provoking words. May God save our girls from these wicked boys and God bless Michale Mathew

This is so touching. Rape is always a sad, wicked and inhumane act and as well undeserving on the victim’s. How much better our society will be if it can be rid of this menace. Whatever we have to do, we have to bring an end to it

  4. Gloria Nelson May 9, 2017 at 7:49 pm

Rape is inhumane and totally wicked. This is really, very emotional

  5. gbemisola May 9, 2017 at 7:53 pm

This is such an extensive writeup. Our girls are wailing, they are suffering and they have no voice to speak up. Thanks to Michale Mathew and to Mama for sharing this with us.

  6. Wilson Adefemi May 9, 2017 at 7:58 pm

This is poignant, I wish us to do something about this, 85 out of 100 girls are raped, violatedly and constantly beaten by inhumane men. They have lost their self worth because of this. I read about the tanzania story and i just couldn’t imagine how their teachers were sleeping with them.

    It’s pathetic.

  7. Yvonne Malema May 9, 2017 at 8:09 pm

Rape is wickedness and it’s totally brutal. Guilty men should be killed

  8. latoya May 9, 2017 at 8:13 pm

Even spanx is worn in the home now. Girls are tormented in the home now, uncles rape them, fathers rape their daughters also

  9. jerry Omole May 10, 2017 at 4:17 pm

    Hmmm. It’s pathetic.
Rape left, right and centre and like what @latoya said, our girls wear spanx in their homes now.
    it’s so pathetic.

I hope something is done. I hope girls can be girls again.

  10. Daramola Olatoye May 10, 2017 at 4:23 pm

Oh my! This is a critical alert. Mothers please make the home conducive for your girls to speak so they can speak out when they notice any strange thing. It’s important.

It’s emotional. Thank you to everyone helping girls to fight this, thank you to this great woman for writing this. It’s not enough that we comment here, we need to share this to the world.

    shame on you all.

  13. Princess May 11, 2017 at 9:05 am

As it is right no, spanx is the only way out for some innocent females out there. They Have to pretty them selfless from those ravenous beautiful out there, who have taken rape as their man job. Same on you all for such absymal act.

  14. Branny May 11, 2017 at 9:14 am

Shame on you all rapist. You will reap what you sow that’s a necessary evil

  15. Ebonychyqui2 May 11, 2017 at 9:24 am

This is very sardonic and lugubrious, that girls Have to wear spanx for protection. My judgement is that any one caught in the act of rape should be sentenced to death.

  16. Oluwatosino May 11, 2017 at 12:19 pm

Hmmmmmmm. What is this world turning into… This is so u fair to innocent souls. Rape is evil, pure wickedness… Imagine, the boys now plan how to rape girls, women.
Oh my world, I feel bitter about this. This is so emotional. Thanks Michale Matthew for being an angel. God bless u. I say a very big AMEN to the prayers in the article.

I can’t even allow my girls play around, even with their uncles, I am being careful with them. I have told them sternly not to allow anyone touch them. It’s a pity that we just have to educate them no matter how small they are because these evil men don’t let them rest all

  18. feranmi philipps May 11, 2017 at 2:15 pm

We shouldn’t focus on the girls alone, young boys are being raped and molested. in fact, statistics shows that men that molest children were molested young boys. In helping the girls, we must help the boys also

    • Olakunle Olajide May 11, 2017 at 4:48 pm

In as much as i would like to agree with you on the fact that boys also get molested at tender ages, i will like to disagree with the fact that men that rape were young boys that were molested. That to me is a blatant excuse.

  19. Maveedah May 11, 2017 at 2:18 pm

    Rape is an evil surge
    we must deal with it.

Thanks to everyone helping girls to combat this menance. God will help our society.

  20. Evelyn Ejiro May 11, 2017 at 2:23 pm

Hmmm. Loud whispers! This is really loud.

It’s emotional and very alarming, our girls wear spanx to school.
Some of them wear spanx at home
some wear spanx to the church and the mosque.

some wear it in the hospital now
Nowhere is safe for our girls. It’s pathetic.
