LOUD WHISPERS: Our Girls Now Wear Spanx To School

In honour of Michale Matthew

Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi

Our girls now wear Spanx to school

Not one, but two, even three pairs of Spanx

It is not that they are fat

Their tummies are still flat

Chinua Achebe told us that ever since men learnt to shoot without missing

Eneke the bird learnt how to fly without perching

Ever since the boys learnt how to use scissors to cut their skirts

And carry out a sickening annual ritual

Our girls have learnt how to wear Spanx to school

The boys strut about

Chests out and voices loud

Clapping, cheering, jeering

Rape is now a sport

Rape is now a joke

Something they look forward to

Something they plan

Something the girls expect

Something the girls have learnt to dread

So they wear Spanx to school

The boys stalk their prey mercilessly

And surprise, surprise, broad daylight is just fine!

The more the audience

The better the fun

The sharper the focus of the cameras clicking away

The boys have scissors

So the girls wear Spanx

It happened last year

It happened last week

It is happening today

Good girls and boys don’t carry scissors to school

They have no knives or sharp objects either

So all a girl can do to make it harder for the demon boys

Is wear Spanx to school

Usually one, but to be safe

Wear two pairs of Spanx to school

Maybe three

The mothers clap, at long last, the girls go to school

Moses, Matthew and Majomi

Martha, Maria and Mary

They all go to school side by side

Martha does not stay home to learn to make the perfect Eba

So that Mathew can go to school to be a Doctor

The fathers grin because now

they can boast that Mathew is a Doctor

Martha is a Lawyer, Moses is an Engineer and Majomi is a Writer

All were created equal

Alas, they are not all equal

The girls have to wear Spanx to school

The groping hands feeling for their panties

The pushing and pulling against the erections of wicked boys

One trying from the front

Another prodding from the back

Oh please fetch me a whip, a cane, a belt

Anything to teach these stupid boys a lesson

Wannabe men who will indeed become men

Boys who molest, abuse and rape girls

On their high school graduation day!

They will graduate

To campuses where they will become cultists

Where they will rape some more and abuse some more

They will become Doctors who rape their female patients

Teachers who harass their students for marks

Pastors who ‘cast out demons’ of only female members of the congregation

Policemen who molest female suspects

Politicians who raid treasuries and plunder the barns meant for the poor

They will make laws and turn around and rape those too

Why not?

Impunity is embedded in their DNA

They were not stopped when the girls wore Spanx to school

Poor, sweet, innocent girls

Whose main concern is not how did I do in Geography? How was my Mathematics?

Is my hair alright? Have my pimples gone?

No, it is ’Is one enough’? I had better wear two’

Thank you Michale Matthew

Thank you for telling us about the girls you saved

There was the first one

‘I reach the girl and we gather her things together.

She ties the torn skirt around her spanx shorts like a wrapper and holds onto me’

And there was another, and another

Over sixty girls and counting, Angel Michale protects them all

‘I give my number to the only girl left with a phone

and this was because she put it into her spanx shorts

as she wore two and used one to roll her phone in it’

Michale Matthew

May God Almighty be with you and all that is yours

May the work of your hands be blessed

May you always find a helper in times of need

Thank you Michale

For being a mother to all

For saving a daughter from disaster

For saving a mother from distress

For saving a father from agony

For being your community’s keeper

For speaking well above a whisper

Thank you amazing, determined, brave woman

As for those who stood and stared and even took photographs

Of the poor girls fighting for their lives and dignity

Shame on you! Shame on you! Shame on you!

Let us say a prayer everyone

For our girls who have to wear Spanx to school

May you never know danger again

May you grow to be the strong, beautiful women you were destined to be

For the boys running around with scissors and open trousers

Wait till we catch you!

Who told you or taught you that being a man has something to do

with what is in your trousers?

What is in your trousers is not a weapon of mass destruction

If you use it anyhow you will be destroyed anyhow

A prayer for all of us

Oh God please forgive us our sins

Whatever we have done for our children to be this way, please forgive us

I hear the wails of the mothers

The girls are wearing Spanx to school!

Now the fathers know there is a problem

What is Spanx? And why is she wearing it to school? Not one but two? Three!!!

Thank you Michale Matthew

If not for you we would not have known

That our girls now wear Spanx to school.

Not one, but two. Even three.

Spanx. To school.

This is so touching. Rape is always a sad, wicked and inhumane act and as well undeserving on the victim’s. How much better our society will be if it can be rid of this menace. Whatever we have to do, we have to bring an end to it

This is such an extensive writeup. Our girls are wailing, they are suffering and they have no voice to speak up. Thanks to Michale Mathew and to Mama for sharing this with us.

This is poignant, I wish us to do something about this, 85 out of 100 girls are raped, violatedly and constantly beaten by inhumane men. They have lost their self worth because of this. I read about the tanzania story and i just couldn’t imagine how their teachers were sleeping with them.

    It’s pathetic.

Rape is wickedness and it’s totally brutal. Guilty men should be killed

Even spanx is worn in the home now. Girls are tormented in the home now, uncles rape them, fathers rape their daughters also

    Hmmm. It’s pathetic.
Rape left, right and centre and like what @latoya said, our girls wear spanx in their homes now.
    it’s so pathetic.

I hope something is done. I hope girls can be girls again.

Oh my! This is a critical alert. Mothers please make the home conducive for your girls to speak so they can speak out when they notice any strange thing. It’s important.

As it is right no, spanx is the only way out for some innocent females out there. They Have to pretty them selfless from those ravenous beautiful out there, who have taken rape as their man job. Same on you all for such absymal act.

This is very sardonic and lugubrious, that girls Have to wear spanx for protection. My judgement is that any one caught in the act of rape should be sentenced to death.

I can’t even allow my girls play around, even with their uncles, I am being careful with them. I have told them sternly not to allow anyone touch them. It’s a pity that we just have to educate them no matter how small they are because these evil men don’t let them rest all

We shouldn’t focus on the girls alone, young boys are being raped and molested. in fact, statistics shows that men that molest children were molested young boys. In helping the girls, we must help the boys also

In as much as i would like to agree with you on the fact that boys also get molested at tender ages, i will like to disagree with the fact that men that rape were young boys that were molested. That to me is a blatant excuse.

Hmmm. Loud whispers! This is really loud.

It’s emotional and very alarming, our girls wear spanx to school.
Some of them wear spanx at home
some wear spanx to the church and the mosque.

some wear it in the hospital now
Nowhere is safe for our girls. It’s pathetic.
