Bank M, Amref To Raise 500 Million – For Africa Mothers

Bank M and Amref Health Africa have partnered to raise 500m/- to train midwives for safe delivery through charity walk.

The joint effort dubbed ‘Stand up for African Mothers’ has been running for the past five years with the main aim of training midwives for safe delivery.

Amref Health Africa Tanzania Country Director Dr Florence Temu said the 2016/17 the programme aims to raise a minimum of 500m/-. “This will eventually contribute towards the reduction of maternal and child mortality in Africa. Let us Stand up for African Mothers,” Dr Temu said when announcing the event yesterday.

The fund expected to support training of 50 nurse midwives at certificate level and upgrade skills of about 400 nurse midwives at diploma level. With the theme “Train midwives for Safe Delivery!” The walk expected to be graced by the Vice President Mama Samia Suluhu Hassan.

The fundraising walk will take place this Saturday starting and finishing at the Green grounds, Oysterbay in Dar es Salaam. “We are extremely grateful to Bank M for their ongoing support, solid contribution to improving the lives across the country and for partnering with us to help create lasting health change in Africa,” said Dr Temu. Bank M’s CEO-Designate Ms Jacqueline Woiso said the partnership has been a great milestone in achieving the bank’s social responsibility initiatives.

“This project, which aims to improve maternal health services throughout Tanzania, reflects our bank’s mission to support the community and promote a healthy and sustainable workforce in the country,” she said. Bank M promised to continue supporting the project which is an international programme launched in October 2011.

The bank supported the programme in the last three years. The project geared to draw attention to the plight of African mothers and to mobilise citizens worldwide, to support African Mothers get the basic medical care they need during pregnancy and childbirth.

Amref Health Africa is an African-led, health development organisation founded in 1957 as the Flying Doctors of East Africa. Amref now touches more than 30 countries across Africa focusing on the most critical health challenges facing the continent, including maternal and child health, sexual reproductive health, HIV and AIDS, TB, malaria, clean water and sanitation and clinical and surgical outreach.
