Uganda is to back any Pakistan-sponsored candidate seeking an elective job in the UN Security Council or any other slot in the world body.

UGANDA

Foreign Affairs state minister Oryem Okello announced the pledge of support on Sunday while addressing a gathering of Ugandans and Pakistani nationals in Lahore during celebrations to mark Uganda’s 54th Independence Day anniversary.

“If and when Pakistan needs Africa’s vote in the Security Council in the UN, Uganda will be there for Pakistan. If and when Pakistan wants the vote of Uganda in the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Uganda will be there for Pakistan,” Minister Oryem said.

Pakistan lost its quest for a seat on the UN Security Council during the June 28 elections and also lost its bid to retain a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2015.

Daily Monitor could not immediately establish how Uganda voted in the two elections, but Mr Oryem was quick to point out that Uganda will walk its talk of support.

“This is a serious relationship. I am the Minister for Foreign Affairs and I am determined to keep my word and instruct my ambassadors that if Pakistan wants our vote for anything, in case Pakistan has a candidate for any international job or if it has an interest in any institution that requires our vote we will be there for Pakistan,” he said.

The Minister, who had earlier visited a simple agricultural machines’ plant and a research institute with over 20 years’ experience in research on bananas, called for closer cooperation in agriculture and agro-technologies.

Pointing out the Diagnostic Centre in Masaka and Equator University as examples of Pakistan-led investments in Uganda, Mr Oryem called on other Pakistani nationals to take advantage of existing investment opportunities in Uganda.

During an earlier meeting with the Pakistani Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Nawaz Sharif, Mr Oryem, cited agriculture, security, education, science and technology as top on the list of areas in which Uganda seeks cooperation with Pakistan.

Modalities of the cooperation agreement are expected to be discussed in November when the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mugume, visits Pakistan.

Also to be discussed is the invitation that Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Shariff extended to President Museveni.
