According to the officer in charge of criminal investigations, Mr Chris Yashaba, the fire is believed to have been ignited following a domestic brawl between Ms Juliet Nakawungu and her husband, Mr Ismail Kigongo.

Mr Yashaba said Ms Nakawungu allegedly set 21 wooden rental houses on fire after getting information that her husband had an affair with another lady identified as Jedah Nanyonjo. “We are investigating the circumstances that led this lady to commit such a crime. We request all those with information to come and file statements with police for further investigations,” Mr Yashaba said.

Witnesses

James Mutyaba, one of the residents who lost property in the fire, said the blaze started from Kikongo’s house but by the time they intervened to rescue their property, it had already gutted other neighbouring houses. Both kigongo and her concubine were reported to be away in a night club.

“Before the lady started the fire, she bought petrol and was speaking of how she would burn the houses that belonged to her husband since he had started fornicating,” Mutyaba said. James Nandu, the police community liaison officer, said large sum of money was lost and about 31 people are stranded.
