Two people were killed on the spot and a third one seriously injured after a lorry plunged into the bed of Kaiti River at a bridge near Wote Town, Makueni County, on Thursday night.
Witnesses said the lorry driver heading to Wote Town attempted to overtake another vehicle at the bridge when it hit the metal rails and plunged into the stony riverbed.
“We have rescued one person but unfortunately two people have been crushed inside the cabin,” Mr Francis Mutuku, a Makueni County Ward Representative who witnessed the accident told the Nation.
A loud bang as the lorry fell in the river drew patrons from a nearby inn who assisted in the rescue operation. The ill-fated lorry had on it machine-cut walling stones that were strewn at the bridge and in the riverbed. The injured was rushed to Makueni County Referral Hospital and the bodies of the two taken to a mortuary at the referral facility.
