The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has called for universal access to sexual and reproductive health services for adolescents and young people, saying this will potentially transform lives.

UNFPA representative Jozef Maerien made the call yesterday during the handover of reproductive health and dignity kits to Burundian refugees at Mahama camp in Kirehe District.

The sexual and reproductive health services tailored to the needs of adolescents and young people were not available in the camp.

The items were procured with $450,000 support from Korea.

The critical reproductive health kits and equipment and dignity kits are meant to ensure continuity of family planning and reproductive health activities in the camp.

UNFPA supported the refugee response in areas such as; safe delivery of hundred babies, reducing the incidence of maternal mortality, capacity building of health service providers.

It also helped in creating demand for adolescent sexual and reproductive health services, equipping of health facilities, supporting procurement and distribution of life-saving equipment for maternal and sexual reproductive health services, and dignity kits to save women’s lives in reproductive age.

The items included 600 dignity kits and reproductive health kits worth $103,043.
